g-loving gloves for more than snowball fights

yoda-handAs most of you know, I’m a bit crazy when it comes to protecting my face from the sun (check out my SPF post).  This summer though, I’ve taken my protective prowess to a whole new level by including driving gloves in my repertoire.

I know it may sound extreme but I’ve heard that hands are the first things to age and I personally don’t want my hands to look like Yoda while my face stays plump and smooth like the proverbial baby bottom.  Putting those two things together is just plain creepy.

baby-bottom1You can Google how to prevent hands from aging and everyone will give you the same advice:

Moisturize
Exfoliate
Use sunscreen
Wear gloves when working with chemicals
Wear gloves when gardening
Wear gloves in cold weather

BUT – no one recommends wearing gloves while in the sun (though I suspect that if China opened up their restrictions on the internet we would get plenty of new sun protection advice).

Again, I’m perfectly happy to stand out as the one freak who thinks this makes good sense.  I’ll leave it to you to decide if you want to join the freak train with me.  Just in case you’re on board, here are some sources for cool and attractive gloves.

NOTES
1.  I’m not recommending those gloves made specifically for sun protection due to purely aesthetic reasons.  They’re hideous.  The gloves I’ve chosen are designed for other, athletic, purposes but they double as UV protective driving gloves.  That said, please ensure that you read the fine print as most golf and tennis gloves are sold individually so you’ll need to buy the right and left hand separately (unless you’re going for an eclectic mix of baby bottom and Yoda).

2.  Also, steer clear of the brand Evertan or Lady First altogether.  They are made with netting that allows sun to penetrate through the glove which obviously defeats the whole purpose.

For those of you with long fingernails and a huge engagement rock try Lady Classic

For you divas with unique flair and a loud personality check out Glove it

Those athletic types out there might love to jump right in and shop REI’s vast collection of gloves made for cycling, paddling, hiking, you name it.

As for me, I’m just rockin’ my classic Walter Genuin gloves.  I love the two-toned designs and variety of color options.

I’m well aware that wearing gloves in the summer might attract attention, but I suspect that the King of Pop would approve.

When I was teaching in Japan, my older students were constantly horrified by my lack of gloves and hats. I obtained several long, fingerless gloves before I came back to the US due to their insistence, and I've started respecting the sun a lot more. Those ladies knew what they were talking about!

Gloves, i have seen those women with the gloves and the hat or umbrella. I think to myself, why in these unbearable heat (as I live in the desert) would you wear that. I then I learned their age and was amazed! So while I haven't worked up the nerve for gloves....I have however become the sunscreen queen and I harass as many as I can to wear sunscreen. Gloves may soon be a part of my everyday wear.....
  • It's funny you do this because my grandmother and I were talking about this a few weeks ago. She didn't start taking care of her hands until her early 50's and she's been both hilarious and dilligent asking me if I'm taking care of mine. She gardens alot (which has only worsened her aging hands), but she nearly 30 years ago, she came across a Reader's Digest article that suggested wearing good lotion (Eucerin or something to that level) underneath latex gloves underneath her work gloves. This keeps her hands moisturized while doing work that would otherwise do cosmetic damage. She says it keeps her "lady fingers lookin' like Lady Fingers". (My grandmother is a pistol and I love it!) :)
  • i found silicon gloveless gloves for gardening. they don't protect from thorns but does keep the junk off.

i wish i could were gloves... again garden mittens not so cool. ...

i agree on the leather being rough on hands i hated golfing when i tried it because of the glove (golf mittens?).

you would think a grown up could get over the fingers getting lonely thing and wear gloves.

i have a shea butter lotion i put on before bed... but probably the best thing would to be stay out of the sun (say's the white girl who is darker then her coffee at the moment) .

laura what you need to do is design something to wear in the summer that looks good on normal sized (like 6/8) people without a tan. (sleeveless please i have broad shoulders). -- and driving mittens ? lol
  • Good tip on wearing latex gloves underneath gardening/work gloves. Sometimes the leather really does scrape up the hands inside the gloves.
  • okay, normally i like your advice but i hate gloves, don't even wear them in the winter, i'm a mitten girl and driving mittens would be odd to say the least.

so with that in mind how about those moisturizers with spf? besides wouldn't you land up with glove hands. (white hands and tan arms?)

Maybe on your advice I will launch a new trend here although I live near Aix-en-provence and the weather is so hot these days. And if I'm asked why i'm wearing gloves in summer, I will say : "Ask Laura Dahl the great fashion designer" , if they tweet you they will smile at me friendly or they will look at me oddly twice ! lol
I like gloves from "Maison Fabre" an old french company created in the the early 1920.
Anyway, hands from all over the world will be grateful to you to be treated so well by their owners and multiplied by two, whaou that's dizzy !! lol
  • Veronique - I checked out Maison Fabre http://www.maisonfabre.com/ and their gloves are fabulous! I can't believe I didn't find them when I was living in Aix.

Laura, I'm so glad you think they're fabulous :) , and for a little more of "gloves shopping " during your next trip in France (maybe) let me tell you about another gloves brand "Georges Morand" which is interesting too !
  • What gloves would Yoda wear? It's probably too late for him.
